Fall is here!

From our November Newsletter

Fall is here! Which means it’s time for our hardworking ladies to take a break. While many farms and chicken owners choose to put lights on their hens to extend egg production, we believe that nature knows best.

Nature calls for a significant decrease in egg production, the renewal of plumage through molting (our coops often resemble the aftermath of a pillow fight), and the overall slowing down of the chickens until spring arrives, marked by the blooming of crocuses and the first flower on our fruitless pear trees.

We consider our birds to be employees, and as their manager, it is our responsibility to ensure they are happy, healthy, and have a clean, ideal workspace. In return, they will provide us with optimal production and long tenures. They have worked hard all summer, tirelessly laying large fertile orbs, and now it’s time for them to take a vacation.

This downtime also allows the humans at TBH Farm to reflect on the past year—what worked well, what could be improved in both farm operations and business practices—and to give ourselves a little rest. This way, we can start the next season feeling refreshed, in a positive mindset, and ready to share the joy that comes from hearing the first peep of an egg and the arrival of a new chick.

We hope everyone is taking inspiration from nature and using this time to embrace the art of coziness this winter!

Cheers!
